Here in Portsmouth New Hampshire, we have many fabulous old, as in really OLD, homes and buildings that are just full of history.  Many of the historic antique homes are still being lived in.  They've been restored over time and are just exquisite homes. 

Some of these homes in Portsmouth date back as far as the 1600's.

                       

We are also fortunate to have some beautiful old schools scattered around town as well as all these gorgeous historical homes.  Some of the older ones sat empty and unused for many years, beautiful inside and out, testaments to generations of students a century and a half ago and more.  Gorgeous brick buildings, huge windows, gorgeous woodwork throughout..........sometimes when you go through the doors, you can almost picture the kids of many Old Portsmouth Families running through the door and out into the yard.........

Several of these beauties have been given new life in the form of gorgeous condos.

This building is the Old Franklin School, built in 1847.  It's the smallest of the 3 buildings that have been made over into condos.  Each unit in this building is very different from the others, different layouts, with some one level and some multi-levels. 

The beautiful exposed brick and huge old wood beams just exude so much charm.  They have wonderful high ceilings and several of them have cathedral ceilings.  There is a courtyard in the back, and these are just a short walk to the downtown shops and restaurants.

The most recent unit in the Old Franklin School Condos to come on the market sold for $275,000 in September of this year (2006).

 

This beautiful building is known as The Whipple School, and has the most condos of the 3 old schools.  This school was built in 1890.  These units have beautiful wood floors, some with exposed brick walls, all with wonderful tall windows making them nice and bright and airy.  High ceilings, typical of old schools, add dramatic flair to these units.

This building is just a very quick walk to downtown - great location and plenty of parking.   

The last 2 condos in the building that sold were both right about $300,000, both were earlier this year (2006).

 

This beauty of an old school is The Haven School, and has the largest units of the 3 old schools.  This school was built in 1877, and is located in the oldest part of town.  One block off the Piscataqua River, which divides New Hampshire and Maine, most of the children of the sea captains and merchants attended this school.

The condos in this lovely old school are quite elegant and dramatic.  Expansive 7 foot tall windows, high ceilings, beautiful wood floors, fireplaces, wonderful built-ins, and other special features are offered in these units.  Haven Park is directly out the front door, which used to be the playground for the students from long ago.

The last 2 units in this buiding to come up for sale sold for $500,000 and $587,000.  Both sales were in 2005.  These units rarely come up for sale, and when they do, they typically sell very quickly.
