New Hampshire and Maine Homes and Condos

 

Portsmouth New Hampshire implemented a free wi-fi area a couple of years or so ago in the downtown business area.  It's gone over so well and the use of it has grown so much that the City of Portsmouth will be expanding our free wi-fi area. 

This new expansion will include most areas of the town, and that is great news!  Terrific news for residents and businesses alike!  And I'd bet our visitors will be loving having access to free wireless internet while visiting our lovely seaside town, too!

 

As we've heard on the news, a number of cities and towns around the country are giving up their wi-fi networks, due to a variety of reasons, mostly high costs of maintaining them and/or the systems that were put in place were too complicated.  Many of those cities and towns put their networks in place all at once, instead of phasing them in slowly, which meant the systems grew outdated all at once due to advancing technologies, and some found that their 'partners' in these wi-fi systems just disappeared as the costs increased. 

These are all things that Portsmouth has managed to buck the trend on.


How'd we do that, you ask? 

Well for starters, our wi-fi network was put in on a much smaller scale to start with and the growth of the network has been done slowly, on purpose. 

The good thing about phasing this in slowly is that it has allowed Portsmouth Communications to take advantage of newer and newer technology in the new phases, keeping the costs down that other cities and towns incurred when they went full force and installed it all at once.

 

A number of businesses have donated equipment and services to make this work, and the University of New Hampshire (UNH) is also part of this system and will be continually monitoring our progress and how well we do.  And with all of that great assistance, Portsmouth has received a state grant as well.  With all of this pooling together of resources, this fabulous citywide wi-fi network will not have cost Portsmouth taxpayers one cent. 

How great is that??

Just one more reason why Portsmouth NH is just an awesome place to live!!

Our local newspaper used this quote to describe what's going on:
