Frugality - How Does Your State and Town Rank?Have you ever heard that saying,![]() Have you ever heard that saying, "Frugal Yankees"? Well, it would appear that it really is true! A.G. Edwards has announced their annual "Nest Egg Index" which rates communities and states around the country based on a variety of factors - putting money away for retirement, personal savings, investments and investing behavior, home ownership, personal debt levels, etc. Coming out on top for the state rankings was Connecticut. New Jersey was second, with Minnesota third, Massachusetts fourth, Maryland came in fifth and my own state of New Hampshire was ranked number six. Check the state rankings to see how your state was ranked in the 2007 Nest Egg State Index Ranking. The highest ranked community, for the second year in a row, was Los Alamos, New Mexico. The second ranked area is made up of the communities of San Jose, Santa Clarita and Sunnyvale California. The Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk area in Connecticut came in third, with Torrington Connecticut ranked fourth, and San Francisco-Oakland California rounding out the top 5 communities as being the most frugal.Five New Hampshire communities made the top 500 - Manchester-Nashua area was ranked number 33; Concord was ranked number 53; Laconia was ranked number 86; Claremont was number 155; Keene was number 171; and Lebanon was number 173. Communities were defined by the Census Bureau, and that's how the areas the "Nest Egg Community Index" used were determined. Find out how your community ranked - 2007 Nest Egg Community Index Ranking. This index survey ranked the top 500 communities in the US based on savings and investing trends of their residents. To come up with the 500 top communities, the survey looked at over 900 communities, and took into account 12 statistical factors. ![]() Those areas and states that were ranked highly were those that had strong housing markets and whose residents were more inclined to have a higher proportion of savings and investing plans, as well as a higher rate of retirement accounts. These same areas also had debt levels that were lower than the national average, despite having higher costs of living than the national average. I always find these kinds of surveys interesting. I like knowing where the areas I live and am interested in rank, and I find the criteria used for these types of surveys interesting as well. There's a saying up here in New England that I really like. I'd never heard of it before moving up here years ago, and have since seen it in many places - prints, needlepoint art work, magazine covers, etc.
"Use it up,
Wear it out, Make it do, Or do without." A pretty thrifty and frugal Yankee saying for sure!!
