Portsmouth NH Real Estate Property Tax Rate Update

If you're a homeowner in Portsmouth New Hampshire, then you should be aware that the Portsmouth city property tax rate is increasing by 3.9% for the fiscal year 2009.  The new rate will be $16.98 per $1,000 of your assessed valuation. 

What does this mean for all of us who are property owners in Portsmouth?  It's a change of just 64 cents over last year's rate of $16.34. 

Portsmouth NH tax year runs from July 1 to June 30th, and this new increase will be reflected in the bills we receive next month.  Our tax bills cover 6 months each, 3 months back and 3 months ahead.

If you feel your assessed value is incorrect, you can always file for an abatement, which is used to contest the value assigned to your property.  I filed an abatement on my property several years ago, and was successful in getting the assessed value at that time lowered.  You do need to do your homework, and have the assessed values of similar properties to back up your claim of an incorrect assessment.  If you really feel the value assigned to your property is too high, make sure to have documents showing this.
