Magic of Mistletoe

Have you ever wondered about mistletoe - where it comes from, how it came to have the romantic magic it does?

Mistletoe as a Parasite

Have you ever wondered about mistletoe - where it comes from, how it came to have the romantic magic it does? I saw a bunch of it for sale somewhere recently around Portsmouth, and I got to wondering how a plant like that evolved into something with the magical powers that mistletoe symbolizes.

Did you know that mistletoe is really a parasite? It is! It's a parasitic shrub that's usually found in fruit trees, maples and sometimes in oaks. And in North America, it's typically found in trees from New Jersey down to Florida.

Mistletoe has been associated with the holidays at this time of year going back for centuries, and has symbolized peace and love.

Homeowners in Portsmouth NH - get ready for the Portsmouth Citywide Annual Holiday Decorating Contest!

Our annual Holiday Decorating Contest began several years ago, and it's a fun way to help celebrate this beautiful holiday season, and to show off our pride in our neighborhoods and in our wonderful seaside city.

Whatever your holiday celebration includes - Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, New Year's - show your spirit and good will in your home's outside decorations!  The more, the merrier, and what fun it is to get together with family and/or friends and tour around town to see all the decorated homes.  You just can't help but smile, inside and out!

The final citywide winners will be announced on Wednesday, December 19th, by Portsmouth Mayor Steve Marchand and our incoming Mayor Tom Ferrini.  The announcements will be made via radio, Portsmouth Community Radio Channel 106.1, and in the Portsmouth Herald the next morning.

Bearfootin' - A GREAT Community Project

While vacationing in Western North Carolina, we came upon a really cool community project -

Maymount Bears

We were on vacation this summer in the mountains in western North Carolina.  My family has a cottage in the little town of Mountain Home, which is nestled between Asheville and Hendersonville.

While we were playing tourist in Hendersonville, we kept seeing all these diffferent bears around town - all decorated and in a variety of locations.  It turns out that we were lucky enough to catch the town of Hendersonville's "5th Annual CeleBEARation - Bearfootin' in Hendersonville".

"Bearfootin' in Hendersonville" is known as one of the premier art exhibits in the western part of North Carolina.  I can tell you from seeing all these wonderfully decorated bears that they are each a work of art.
